You are what you eat

People are increasingly eating too much of nearly everything, too much sugar, too much fat, too much cholesterol, too much salt. They eat too many calories and eat too often. Such abundance of food has laid a foundation for coronory artery disease, stroke, high blood pressure, athritis, diabetes, obesity and several types of cancer.

Here are some of the serious culprits

  1. Sugar – devoid of fibre and nutrients. Because of their caloric density they are well suited to promote obesity
  2. Refined foods- we used to think refinement was good ( super refined mealie meal, super refined bread …..) . Fibre is necessary in protecting us from certain cancers, stabilizing blood sugar, controlling weight and preventing gastrointestinal problems such as gallstones, haemorrhoids, diverticulitis and constipation
  3. Salt-Most people consume 10 to 15 grams of salt a day ( 2 to 3 teaspoons) .This is much more than is actually needed and contributes prominently to high blood pressure, heart failure and kidney disease
  4. Fat- Most people dont realize that they are consuming two to three times more of fat, oil and grease than is for optimal good health . As a result blood vessels plug up, impotence set in and heart and brain suffer. A high fat diet contributes to overweight, diabetes and certain cancers
  5. Protein – A diet with meat and animal products provides more protein, fat and cholesterol than the body can use. Scientists now recognize that a more natural ,traditional diet containing less animal protein and less fat and cholesterol is essential for improved health and longevity
  6. Beverages- people dont drink enough water. Instead many now drink more soft drink, beer, coffee, tea and sweet drinks everyday. Because most of these drinks are loaded with calories from sugar and alcohol they play a havoc with blood sugar levels and sabotage weight control efforts. Caffeine, phosphates and other chemicals found in beverages pose additional health risks.
  7. Is there anything safe to eat? , Yes think fruits, vegetables, potatoes, legumes, beans, whole wheat, millet, oats etc are the mainstay of good diet and goldmine of delectable and healthful foods.
  8. Supplement your nutrition with Aloe vera gel which is loaded with amazing nutrients that feed your body. There are also supplements made from fruits and vegetables to make you look and feel better.
